The materials used for making furniture are many and are of different varieties.

Wood is strong, durable and unfailing. A lengthy plank of wood is enough to create one piece of furniture. Wooden furniture adds splendor in the interiors of a home and can also be used outdoors. They can be carved to add to its beauty. Wood is classified as soft or hard.

Evergreen trees are the sources of soft woods. They are flexible, grow faster, flexible and are cheaper than hard woods.

Trees that shed leaves in winter are the hard woods. They are famous for their toughness but grow slower than soft woods. They are usually expensive.

Oak and mahogany are the common hard woods used in furniture making. Oak is either white or red. White oak is of a greenish shade whereas red oak is of a pinkish shade. Mahogany, on the other hand, is durable and strong making it popular in making furniture. Furniture with carvings is made of this type of wood. It defies decay and does not bulge or contract even if it gets wet. High quality furniture pieces are commonly made of mahogany.

Plastic used for furniture was intended to be used for garden chairs and offices only. It proved to be durable, though, and can be easily moved; hence, it is now one of the popular materials used for furniture making. Furniture made of plastic can be easily stored. They can be piled in the storeroom together with other items. There are two types of plastics used for making furniture: thermoplastics and thermosets.

Environment-friendly, thermoplastics are those that can be melted down and reprocessed. Furniture made of thermoplastic has loose molecular chain bond that makes it flexible.

The complete opposite of thermoplastics, thermosets or thermosetting polymers is used as support in furniture making. They will burn when heated up.

Metal

Having the topmost liquefying points and densities, metals can be shaped in different forms without being broken. They can be changed into wires. Wrought iron, aluminum, and steel are the kinds of metals used for making furniture.

Although metals require low maintenance, they are long-lasting. They do not oxidize and can be used in a traditional- or modern-themed room. They are available in various sizes and shapes and are comfortable. Chairs made of metals have ventilation holes.
